Waterproof Core Construction & Durability

Waterproof Core Construction & Durability

The SmartCore Flooring Midnight Onyx Marble tile is engineered with a rigid polymer core that delivers 100% waterproof protection. Unlike traditional ceramic or porcelain marble tiles that can crack under impact, our vinyl construction absorbs shock and resists chips.

The 20-mil commercial-grade wear layer shields the photographic print from scratches, scuffs, and pet claws. We’ve tested this flooring under heavy foot traffic conditions, and it maintains its appearance even in high-use commercial corridors.

Installation & Subfloor Compatibility

Installation & Subfloor Compatibility

Click-Lock Floating System

Midnight Onyx Marble installs as a floating floor using our proprietary Uniclic locking mechanism. The planks engage at a 25-degree angle and snap into place without adhesive. Most rooms install in a single day with basic household tools.

You can install directly over existing vinyl, tile, concrete, or wood subfloors as long as the surface is clean, dry, and level within 3/16″ over 10 feet. For spaces with slight texture variations, consider pairing this tile with options like Sedona Concrete or Chatham Stone that offer similar subfloor tolerance.

Design Applications & Room Suitability

Design Applications & Room Suitability

The dramatic black-and-white palette of Midnight Onyx Marble creates a statement floor in contemporary and transitional interiors. Designers frequently specify this tile for high-end residential bathrooms, powder rooms, and kitchen accent zones where the marble aesthetic elevates the space.

In commercial projects, we’ve seen this product installed in hotel lobbies, spa reception areas, and upscale retail fitting rooms. The 12″ × 24″ format reads as authentic tile from a standing height, and the micro-beveled edges create subtle grout lines that enhance realism.

Stunning marble look in our master bath
We installed Midnight Onyx in our master bathroom and it completely transformed the space. The black and white veining looks like real marble, and guests always ask where we sourced the tile. Installation was straightforward—my contractor said it was one of the easiest floors he's laid. No issues with water after six months of daily use.

Perfect for our retail boutique entrance
I own a bridal boutique and needed flooring that looked high-end but could handle foot traffic and the occasional spilled champagne. Midnight Onyx delivers on both fronts. It's held up beautifully through a full wedding season, and the dramatic look sets the tone as soon as clients walk in.

Waterproof claims are real
I was skeptical about vinyl tile in a bathroom, but after our basement flooded last winter, I'm a believer. The Midnight Onyx in our downstairs half-bath sat in standing water for hours and came out completely unharmed. Cleaned up perfectly and looks brand new.

Easier install than expected
I'm a DIY homeowner with moderate skills, and I was able to install this tile in our kitchen in a weekend. The click-lock system is intuitive, and the pre-attached underlayment saved time. Only wish the cartons came with a few extra edge pieces for tricky cuts around cabinets.

Luxe look without the marble price tag
We priced out natural marble for our entryway and couldn't justify the cost. Midnight Onyx gave us the same dramatic aesthetic at a fraction of the price. The veining pattern varies enough between tiles that it looks authentic, not like a repeating print.

Holds up to our three large dogs
We have three Labs who track in mud, water, and who knows what else. This flooring cleans up in seconds and shows zero scratches from their nails after eight months. I'm thrilled we chose a durable product that also looks elegant.

Midnight Onyx Marble Installation & Care Questions

Yes, as long as the existing tile is firmly adhered, clean, and level within our tolerance guidelines. Fill any grout lines deeper than 1/8" with floor patch or self-leveling compound to create a smooth surface.

Remove any loose tiles and repair voids before installation. The rigid core construction of Midnight Onyx can bridge minor imperfections, but starting with a properly prepared subfloor ensures long-term performance.

While Midnight Onyx is 100% waterproof and suitable for bathroom floors, we do not recommend it for shower walls or inside shower pans. The click-lock seams are water-resistant but not designed for constant direct water exposure found in vertical wet areas.

For bathroom floors outside the shower enclosure, this tile excels—it won't warp, swell, or stain from splashed water or high humidity. Ensure proper ventilation in bathrooms to prevent condensation buildup on any flooring product.

Natural marble requires sealing, professional installation with thinset mortar, and ongoing maintenance to prevent etching from acidic cleaners. It's cold underfoot and can crack under impact.

SmartCore Flooring Midnight Onyx Marble replicates the marble aesthetic with a photographic print protected by a durable wear layer. It's warmer to the touch, installs without specialized tools, and needs only routine damp mopping. The rigid core resists impacts that would chip or crack natural stone.

Yes, concrete slabs are an ideal subfloor for Midnight Onyx as long as they're dry, clean, and level. Perform a calcium chloride moisture test if you suspect excess ground moisture—readings above 5 lbs per 1,000 square feet require a vapor barrier.

Lay 6-mil polyethylene sheeting over the concrete with seams overlapped 8 inches and taped, then install the flooring on top. The waterproof core prevents moisture from reaching the living space, making this an excellent choice for below-grade installations.

Individual tiles can be removed and replaced without disturbing the surrounding floor. Use a circular saw with the blade depth set to the thickness of the flooring (5.5mm) to cut through the damaged tile's center, then pry out the pieces.

For the replacement tile, remove the locking tongue on the long side and one short side using a utility knife. Apply a bead of vinyl flooring adhesive to the subfloor, set the new tile in place, and weight it down for 24 hours. The repair will be nearly invisible when complete.

Midnight Onyx uses a multi-layer printing process with four distinct veining patterns that rotate throughout production. In a typical room installation, you'll see natural variation that mimics real marble slabs.

For the most authentic look, we recommend opening multiple cartons and dry-laying tiles before installation. This allows you to distribute patterns evenly and avoid placing identical tiles directly adjacent to each other.

None—Midnight Onyx Marble includes a pre-attached 1.5mm IXPE foam underlayment on the back of each tile. This integrated padding provides sound dampening and minor subfloor forgiveness without additional materials.

The only exception is if you're installing over a concrete slab with moisture concerns, in which case you'll add a 6-mil poly vapor barrier beneath the flooring. Standard cork or foam underlayment is not required and would actually interfere with the click-lock system.
