Construction & Waterproof Technology

The smartcore hanover hickory vinyl plank flooring features our rigid core technology — a dense stone-polymer composite that resists denting, temperature shifts, and moisture intrusion. Unlike traditional vinyl or laminate, the rigid core won’t expand or contract with humidity changes, making it ideal for basements, kitchens, bathrooms, and mudrooms.
Each plank includes an integrated underlayment that reduces sound transmission and adds cushion underfoot. The 20-mil wear layer is fortified with aluminum oxide for scratch resistance, while the waterproof core means spills, splashes, and wet pets are no match for Hanover Hickory. Installation is floating-floor only — no glue, no nails — and works over most existing hard surfaces.
Hickory Grain Authenticity

Hickory’s wild grain and color variation set it apart from more uniform species like the subtle elegance found in Brunswick Maple or the consistent tones of oak varieties. We’ve captured that natural character in Hanover Hickory with multi-tonal planks that range from pale wheat to toasted pecan.
The embossed texture follows the grain lines, so the surface feels as authentic as it looks. Random plank visuals ensure no two planks are identical — just like real hickory milled from different trees. This variation creates depth and movement across the floor, complementing both rustic farmhouse and modern transitional interiors.
Installation & Subfloor Requirements

Preparation
Hanover Hickory installs as a floating floor using our Uniclic system. The subfloor must be clean, dry, flat, and structurally sound. Maximum variance is 3/16″ over 10 feet. Concrete subfloors should be cured at least 60 days; wood subfloors must be exterior-grade plywood or OSB.
Installation Process
Acclimate planks in the installation room for 48 hours. Begin installation from the longest wall, clicking the short ends together first, then angling and locking the long side. Stagger end joints at least 6″ between rows. Maintain a 1/4″ expansion gap at all walls and fixed objects. Most rooms install in a single day without professional tools.

Hanover Hickory Flooring Questions
Yes. Hanover Hickory's 100% waterproof rigid core construction makes it ideal for full bathrooms, including around tubs and showers. The waterproof barrier extends through the entire plank, so standing water and high humidity won't cause swelling or damage. Maintain the required 1/4" expansion gap at walls and fixtures, and ensure the subfloor is level and dry before installation.
Hanover Hickory replicates the grain patterns and color variation of natural hickory without the maintenance challenges. Real hardwood hickory requires refinishing, is vulnerable to water damage, and can be difficult to install. Our vinyl plank is 100% waterproof, installs with a simple click system, and needs only routine sweeping and damp mopping. The embossed texture and multi-tonal visuals deliver authentic hickory character at a fraction of the cost and upkeep.
Installation requires basic hand tools: a tape measure, pencil, utility knife with extra blades, straight edge, and tapping block. A pull bar helps with the last row. No saws are needed for most cuts — score the plank face and backing with a utility knife, then snap along the line. For intricate cuts around doorways or pipes, a jigsaw works well. The click-lock system eliminates the need for adhesive, nails, or specialized flooring tools.
Yes. Hanover Hickory works with radiant heat systems, including electric and hydronic. The subfloor surface temperature must not exceed 85°F. Turn off the heating system 48 hours before installation and leave it off for 48 hours after completion. Gradually increase temperature in small increments once the floor is fully installed. The rigid core construction conducts heat efficiently while maintaining stability.
Use transition moldings at doorways and room changes where Hanover Hickory meets carpet, tile, or other hard surfaces. T-moldings work for same-height transitions, reducers handle height differences, and thresholds finish exterior doorways. Match molding color to the floor or choose a complementary shade. Leave the standard 1/4" expansion gap, and secure moldings to the subfloor — not to the floating vinyl planks.
Yes, if the existing floor is smooth, level, and firmly attached. Fill grout lines on ceramic tile with floor patch compound and sand smooth. Embossed or cushioned vinyl should be removed, but smooth sheet vinyl can remain if it's well-adhered. The subfloor must meet the 3/16" in 10 feet flatness requirement. Always check that the combined floor height won't interfere with appliances or door clearances before proceeding.
Hanover Hickory is backed by a lifetime residential warranty covering manufacturing defects, wear-through of the wear layer, and staining from normal household use. Commercial installations receive a 10-year light commercial warranty. The warranty does not cover damage from improper installation, flooding, extreme heat, or neglect. Retain proof of purchase and follow the maintenance guidelines to ensure full warranty protection.
